Learn more about disease issues from this past year, future disease risks and how to treat them during the 2024 CPM Short Course and MCPR Trade Show sessions Dec. 10-12 at the Minneapolis Hilton Hotel.

Following the wet summer of 2024, Dean Malvick, professor of plant pathology at the University of Minnesota, will lead a session titled “A Recap of Corn and Soybean Disease Problems in Minnesota for 2024 and Future Risks.”

Some reoccurring disease problems from this past year included southern corn rust, tar spot and northern corn leaf blight in corn and sudden death syndrome, brown stem rot, Rhizoctonia root and stem rot and phytophthora rot in soybeans.

“We want to alert folks of these problems, what’s associated with these risks, what the risks might be in the future and how we might want to consider managing them,” said Malvick. “We can take this year as a learning opportunity to be better prepared for the future.”

This session is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Thurs. Dec 12.

In addition, Michael Wunsch, plant pathologist at the North Dakota State University Carrington Research Extension Center, will host a session called “Optimizing White Mold Management in Soybean and Dry Beans with Fungicides” on Wednesday, Dec. 11.

The presentation will provide a comprehensive review of the dry bean and soybean white mold fungicide application research that was conducted in eastern North Dakota over the past decade. Concise data summaries will be presented to facilitate improved decision making for:

  • Optimizing fungicide application timing when conditions favor white mold as dry beans and soybeans enter bloom
  • Optimizing fungicide spray droplet size relative to canopy characteristics, row spacing and nozzle manufacturer
  • Optimizing the interval between applications when a second fungicide application is made
  • Assessing the economic return associated with the increased fungicide spray volume

The session is scheduled to begin at 1:55 p.m.
