Getting to the roots of an issue takes some digging, the right tools and the right mindset to tackle it. And when it comes to getting into the weeds, the Minnesota Crop Production Retailers (MCPR) is pulling in industry expert Tom Peters for the 2024 CPM Short Course and Trade Show, taking place Dec. 10-12 at the Hilton Hotel in Minneapolis.

Peters has been working on behalf of North Dakota State University and the University of Minnesota to fight weeds for 42 years in the public and private sectors.

He’s ready to jump-start some different conversations.

“I have been all-in on chemical weed control since I took my first industry job in 1982,” Peters said. “I have diversified from a single herbicide approach to herbicide mixtures and finally, layered approaches to weed management. However, I think it’s time to discuss new ideas.”

Peters’ session, titled ‘Weed Management: What do they mean when they say implement a systems approach?”, will be held Dec. 11 at 3:15 p.m. and repeated at 4:10 p.m.

He plans to digest possible strategies for integrated weed management, which includes using mechanical and cultural control strategies in addition to herbicides.

“My goal for this presentation is to try to figure out where exactly we are at with respect to weed management in 2024 and to take an applied (extension) approach at defining and evaluating some of these new ideas to determine if they can be implemented on the farm, at the retail store or at the cooperative in the immediate future,” he said.

Peters’ session will complement a full agenda of educational sessions that highlight everything from nutrient to pest management, soil health and more.
